There could have been no better place to convene for the 2012 World Figure Skating Championships than the Côte d’Azur. The beautiful city of Nice, situated on the Mediterranean Sea, was bathed in bright sunlight and balmy spring weather the entire week. How could anyone complain?
Inside the Palais des Expositions, Japanese skaters wrote themselves into the history books in the men’s and pairs events, as did Carolina Kostner, who claimed Italy’s first World title.
Some rose from obscure short program placements and landed on podiums while others fell far below their own expectations.
It was a week where anything could and did happen.
