They came out of nowhere. Less than a year after joining forces, Caydee Denney and John Coughlin were standing atop the U.S. national podium.
When Coughlin and his former partner Caitlin Yankowskas captured the 2011 U.S. pairs title and landed in sixth at the World Championships in Moscow, they appeared to be on the verge of becoming serious medal contenders.
That excitement was short-lived, when Coughlin announced his retirement from competitive skating a few weeks later.
But before anyone could blink, he recanted and announced he was partnering with Denney, who found herself adrift when her former partner Jeremy Barrett decided to hang up his skates.
“From the moment Caydee and I initially stepped onto the ice, I felt very much at ease,” Coughlin explained.
