U.S. Figure Skating and U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame Chair Dr. Lawrence Mondschein announced today the class of 2010 for induction into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame Jan. 21, 2010, at the 2010 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Spokane, Wash.

Selected to be inducted are 2002 Olympic champion Sarah Hughes, three-time World pairs medalists Jenni Meno and Todd Sand, and Ice Capades director and producer/choreographer Robert Turk. Inductees were selected in the “Outstanding Competitors” (Hughes, Meno and Sand) and “Outstanding Contributor with a Creative Impact” (Turk) categories.

“This year there were many outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to our sport,” Mondschein said. “We would like to thank the nominators, nominees and electors for their continued support of the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame.”

Sarah Hughes

On Feb. 21, 2002, Sarah Hughes became the first person to go from fourth after the short program to winning the Olympic gold medal. At 16, she is the fourth-youngest Olympic ladies figure skating champion. Hughes executed the most technically demanding program ever seen by a lady in the Olympics en route to becoming the seventh American woman to capture figure skating’s most coveted prize. She represented the Skating Club of New York and was coached by Robin Wagner.

Jenni Meno and Todd Sand

Meno and Sand began a skating partnership after the 1992 World Figure Skating Championships that united them not only as a pairs team but also as husband and wife, in 1995. It took only two years for this pair to become U.S. champions, in 1994, a title they held consecutively through 1996. They competed in six World Championships, winning bronze medals in 1995-96 and a silver medal in 1998.

Robert Turk
Turk gives the term “one-man show” a new meaning. A talented combination of musician, dancer and figure skater, he has more than 22 years of experience with the Ice Capades as a director and producer/choreographer, having begun as a line skater with the show and understudy to 1942 U.S. champion Robert Specht. Turk was the choreographer for many skating specials including “Highlights of Ice Capades in the 60s,” Ice Capades specials and a live, weekly television skating show from California. He created a school of dance on ice in the 1950s.
