2017 Asian Winter Games
The two cities of Sapporo and Obihiro hosted the 2017 Asian Winter Games. Originally scheduled to take place in 2015, but on on July 3, 2009 the Olympic Council of Asia’s general assembly committee approved a change to move the Games to the year before an Olympic Winter Games going forward. The Games officially opened on 19 February with the opening ceremony, though curling and hockey events had started the day before, and ended on February 26 with the closing ceremony.
Sapporo and Obihiro, the only cities that submitted bids, were announced as the hosts on January 31, 2011. It will be the third time Sapporo has hosted this event and the fourth time it has been held in Japan. Sapporo held the two first Asian Winter Games in 1986 and 1990.
74 skaters from 17 nations are scheduled to compete as at February 19, 2017.
