Javier Fernández graces the cover of the IFS April 2019 issue. The Spanish star bid farewell to the competitive skating world at the 2019 European Championships. The native of Madrid closed out his 12-year career by capturing his seventh consecutive European title. With Olympic bronze, two World and seven Grand Prix titles to his credit, Fernández proved that sometimes the best do not come from established skating nations. Our cover story looks back at his impressive career, the highs and lows, the success and the setbacks.

 

Joubert last skated competitively at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, where he placed 13th in his fourth and final appearance on an Olympic stage. Immediately following the free skate he retired from the sport. While Joubert has not quite hung up his own blades for good, it is clear that his focus is in a different place now.

With only the top six finishers qualifying directly for the national team and receiving funding, the 2019 Russian Championships were a battle on many levels. The fields were deep and nerves sometimes failed — many say this competition is the hardest of the season.
